Flower Head Sculpture Experiment
My goal with the flower head was to push the limits of my 3D building abilities and to make it out of as many recycled or second-hand materials as I possibly could.
I started by gathering cardboard, a wire tomato planter, and tape and playing with some ideas for a basic structure and design. Once I created the form out of tape and cardboard I used the same glue and paper strip method that I did for the first mask.
After 4 or 5 layers of paper had fully dried I painted the whole thing and began to sculpt the eyes out of air-drying clay.
After several hours of painting and sculpting, the mask came together as a joyous explosion of life, nature, and color.
For me, this project represents the journey of learning to take imperfect action, even when you don’t know how you’re going to get where you want to be. This creation is far from perfect, but the process brought me joy, and that feels like more than enough.
