Paper mache: Warrior Mask
Paper mache
Paper mache is essentially dipping paper in glue and then laying the paper in thin layers on a shape or mold. The paper absorbs some of the glue and gets super malleable from the moisture. I’ve barely scratched the surface of what is possible with this medium and I’m so happy to get to share my process with you today!
Keep in mind, I’m no expert. Here’s what I did:
I started by pressing a couple sheets of aluminum foil to my face to create a rough face shape for the mask. Then I dipped newspaper strips into a 1:1 glue and water mixture and placed the glue-covered strips all over the face-form until it was fully covered. I let it dry completely and then I repeated the process three more times.
Once all the layers were dry I found inspiration for painting the mask from Avatar Kyoshi’s makeup in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Additionally, I molded 3D ears which I sewed on to the sides of the mask and added some ear hairs just for fun. The earrings I made out of some seed pods and string.
