Recently, I’ve been experimenting more with paper mache and paper clay. This blog post is a little introduction to these mediums and some resources to help you get started.

Paper Mache

Paper mache, derived from the French term meaning "chewed paper," is a crafting technique that involves mixing torn paper or newspaper strips with adhesive to create unique sculptures and crafts. This versatile medium can be molded into various shapes and sizes, making it ideal for creating anything from masks and figurines to decorative bowls and piñatas.

Paper Clay

Paper clay is a form of air-dry clay that combines paper pulp with a binding agent such as glue or paste. Similar to traditional clay, paper clay can be sculpted, carved, and molded into intricate designs. Once dried, it becomes lightweight and durable, making it suitable for a wide range of projects.

Masks: Make eye-catching masks for parties or wall art. Get creative with colors and designs!
Sculptures: Sculpt creatures, characters or anything else you can dream up. Let your imagination run wild!

Ingredients for Paper Mache:

Newspaper strips or torn paper
White glue or flour and water mixture (wheatpaste)
Balloons, cardboard, or other forms for shaping
Paints, brushes, and other decorative materials

How to Make and use paper mache:

Tear newspaper into strips
Prepare the adhesive mixture by combining white glue or flour and water until it reaches a paste-like consistency.
Dip newspaper strips into the adhesive mixture and layer them onto the chosen form, such as a balloon or cardboard shape, smoothing out any wrinkles or air bubbles.
Allow the paper mache to dry completely before adding additional layers or decorations.

Paper pulp (created by soaking paper in water and blending it)
White glue or paste
Cornstarch or flour (optional, for added strength)
Water (for consistency)

How to Make and use paper clay:

For paper clay, mix the paper pulp with white glue or paste until it forms a workable clay-like consistency. Add cornstarch or flour if desired for added strength.
Sculpt, mold, or carve the paper clay into the desired shape and allow it to air dry thoroughly.
