The Cocoon
A cocoon is a place to rest and melt inward. A place to be held and honored so that you may emerge transformed.
Creating this crocheted cocoon was a natural extension of my ecstatic dance, performance art, crochet & somatic water therapy practices. It came from a curiosity that was sparked during a water class at my very first Healing Waters retreat where several people held a large sheet in the water and I laid on it and rolled around however I wanted.
Even in the exponential freedom of the water, I noticed myself returning to the fetal position, as a resting place, without thinking. I was inspired to create a womb-like space that would restrict mobility and force me to curl into the fetal position. Being inside of it is restrictive in a relaxing way. The soft yarn does give slightly when pushed, but not enough for the wearer to change positions.
I created this pattern freehand with black acrylic yarn.
